Five Ways to Avoid Morning Grogginess

We've all experienced it, the morning alarm clock goes off and all we can do is hit the snooze button...again...and again...and again! Did you know, we should wake up naturally, without an alarm, feeling refreshed and ready for the day? What a concept! Try implementing 1 (or all 5!) of the steps below to help up your morning energy game!

1. ABSOLUTELY NO ELECTRONICS IN BED

Keep your electronics away from your bed, or even better, out of the bedroom all together! The lights in our electronic devices actually stimulate the brain, sending the signal for us to stay awake! Ditch the electronics within 30 minutes of bed time, and opt for a good book instead. This will help your body and mind fall into a deeper sleep, more quickly.

2. KEEP THE BEDROOM DARK

Do you have a lot of light coming into your room at night? If so, whether from electronics (alarm clocks, cable boxes, TVs, etc) or from street lights outside, cover them up! These lights can also stimulate the brain and make restful sleep difficult. Investing in black out curtains is another way to help keep the bedroom extra dark, limiting light coming in from the street outside.

3. NATURAL LIGHT IN THE MORNING

Expose yourself to natural light in the morning! This is the best way to wake up, through sunlight! Natural light helps wake us up in a more gentle way, vs. flicking on the fluorescents. It also helps our biologic clock to be in alignment with the sun - which is how it's meant to be!

4. EXERCISE IN THE MORNING

Before starting the day, get your body moving! This helps increase cortisol levels in the morning, which is when they should be the highest. For some, exercising at night is detrimental to sleep, while working out in the morning can help tremendously with energy levels. Whether it's s gym session, at home yoga practice, or walk outside, moving in the morning is FABULOUS for energy levels.

5. GO BULLETPROOF

Do you love to enjoy a hot (or cold) morning beverage? Whether its coffee or tea (caffeinated or decaf) try adding a spoonful of grassfed butter or organic cocounut oil to your drink (I like both!), blend it, and enjoy! This not only gives your body a morning boost, but by adding some great healthy fats, it helps increase energy levels, and significantly reduces any caffeine crash later in the day.

I hope these tips help you wake up refreshed, energized, and ready for the day. Of course, the MOST important thing is to get enough sleep, the average adult needs 8 HOURS per night!
